Where we Sail
Sailing has always been integral part of Sri Lankan culture originating with the fisherman of the Island. Competitive sailing originated in the Port of Colombo where most races were conducted offshore. Dehaweela Sailing Club in the High country conducted their own racing until the club closed in 1973. Today the most active club is the CMYC, which conducts races every Sunday on Bologoda Lake. Bentota, just south of Colombo provides an ideal location for Windsurfing, either on the river or offshore. The SLNSC conducts regattas in several locations around the island, these are usually offshore regattas originating in Trincomalee or Galle Harbours. In 2008 the CMYC conducted Sri lanka’s first passage race of 47.3 Nm over 3 days from Colombo (Panadura) to Galle, with stops overnight in Bentota and Hickaduwa.
